A Nutritionist's advice for staying healthy during monsoon


Monsoon season gives us great relief after scorching summer heat. But Our body is more susceptible to diseases during rainy season. Therefore, we need to be careful with what we eat and drink. Monsoon time we also find fluctuations in weather conditions,taking care of our overall health becomes extremely important with the changing weather conditions.

Here are some important tips for staying healthy during monsoon time
1) Street food and juices from outside must be avoided during monsoon as it may cause stomach infection. During monsoon time our digestive system and digestion processes also slow down which may lead to gastronomic distress.

2)It is adviced to check the cleanliness of the restaurant and serving cutleries. Always cross check if the food is cooked properly when eating out side food.

3) We should include seasonal fruits like peaches, plums, cherries, jamun, pomegranate in our daily diet because these fruits are packed with vitamins A and C, fiber, and antioxidants.

4) Avoid eating pre-cut fruits and juices from roadside vendors, and stick to high-quality fresh cut fruits.

5) Green leafy vegetables should be used after proper cleaning as they contain active bacteria and virus that may cause bacterial and viral infections.It is advised to eat steamed salads, vegetables instead of raw vegetables.

6) During monsoon our digestion slows down therefore we should include probiotics like curd, buttermilk, kefir, pickled vegetables to make our digestion smoothly and gut flora healthy.

7) Include food items in our diet which are rich in anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and antioxidant properties such as ginger, garlic, turmeric, black pepper ,ashwagandha etc

8) Avoid non vegetarian food items particularly sea food during monsoon because Salmonella and E-coli and many more disease causing microbes are present in it which leads to upset stomach, indigestion and food poisoning.

9) Proper hydration of body is very much required during monsoon time because high level of humidity during the monsoon season, we not only lose out water content through sweating but rarely find ourselves feeling thirsty which is why we just don't drink enough water. we should include plenty of warm fluids like soup, masala tea, green tea, broth, dal, etc. daily in our diet as they are good for rehydration and are great for the immune system.

10) Wash your hands with a hand wash before and after having a meal.
